The Algonquin Wits: Robert Benchley on His Finances

Word Root Exercise: Quin, Quint, Quintu, Quinque

Here is a worksheet on the Latin roots quin, quint, quintu, and quinque. You probably already recognize the meaning of these roots as five and fifth. This root is very productive in English and probably quintessential to student vocabulary building.

Term of Art: Cliometrics

 “Cliometrics: A term formed by compounding the muse of history and the concept of measurement, devised by its practitioners to describe the ‘new quantitative economic history’ which developed in the United States during the late 1950s, and rapidly became controversial in the American and European historical community. Cliometricians applied sophisticated statistical techniques (such as regression analysis) to historical data, and (to cite the example of the most prominent studies) attempted to calculate the profitability of slavery in the period before the American Civil War, and to quantify the contribution of the American railroads to economic growth (see R.W. Fogel and S.L. Engerman, Time on the Cross, 1974, and Fogel’s Railroads and American Economic Growth, 1964).

Cliometric work was controversial, not only because of the usual distrust of the (usually reconstructed) numerical data and the (occasionally questionable) use of advanced statistical techniques, but also because the most prominent studies framed their hypotheses in the novel form of explicit counterfactuals. That is, for example, they asked the question ‘What would have happened if the railroads had not been built?’ Most also rested on what were deemed to be the rather narrow behaviorist assumptions of neo-classical economics.

With hindsight, it is easy to see that the new quantitative history was not in fact all that novel, since many of the leading economists and economic historians of the early twentieth century made liberal use of quantitative historical data and neo-classical theory respectively. The use of large-scale data-sets, further encouraged by developments in computer technology, is now established practice in modern history. In contemporary usage, the term cliometrics is still commonly applied to attempts to apply social science theory and statistical analyses to historical data, but it no longer describes a sharply defined school. Cliometric analyses are now found across a wide range of substantive historical subject areas.”

Perhaps this lesson plan on the Greek word root auto–it means self and same–might complement those worksheets, or vice versa. I probably don’t need to tell you how productive this root is in English; it is at the basis of huge number of words used across academic domains.

Word Root Exercise: Radic, Radix

If you can use it, here is a worksheet on the Latin roots radic and radix. They mean root. I imagine teachers in both mathematics and the hard sciences recognize these roots. They are at the base of terms of art in your domains such as radical as well as some big words related to neuropathic disease.

The Weekly Text, January 3, 2020: A Lesson Plan on the Concept of Solving Problems in Mathematics

Let me begin by stipulating that where math teaching is concerned, I leave a lot to be desired.

So, several years ago, when I was tasked with developing a math and science literacy unit for struggling learners, I had little time and few ideas, so I began planning one of my standard literacy units. Fortunately I had a couple of colleagues to coach me on some of the actual math work (and thanks to Nate Bonheimer and Jeremy Krevat for this). I’ve been posting lessons from this unit as I’ve gone along.

This week’s Text, therefore, is this lesson on the concept of solving problems. This lesson begins with this extended context clues worksheet on the verb solve (it’s used both intransitively and transitively) and the noun solution. These definitions of solve and solution can serve either as the teacher’s copy or as a learning support. This problem set and comprehension questions serves as the second piece of work for students. Here is one version of the answer key and here is another. Finally, here is the answer-key template if you decide to develop this lesson further and need it.

Let me end where I began: I am not a particularly deft math teacher, so this is not, by this blog’s standards, a superior piece of work. However, it may well work as a framework for a number of lessons on understanding the lexicon we use with mathematics.

Word Root Exercise: Peri-

I don’t know that I’ve ever used this worksheet on the Greek word root peri–it means around–in my classroom, but that is mostly because I have so many of these things, and many of them simply take priority. As you will see, the words on this worksheet (other than perimeter) aren’t exactly part of our daily vernacular in this country–though if you are older, you may, like me, find yourself using periodontal more than you would prefer.
