The Weekly Text, 23 August 2024: A Lesson Plan on the Latin Word Root Uni

Alright, as the summer winds down and the days contract, this week’s Text is this lesson on the Latin word root uni. You already know, of course, that it means one. You also know that this root is quite productive in English, giving us words like unidirectional, unify, unilateral, and unique, all of which are included (along with a list of cognates in the Romance languages) on the scaffolded worksheet that is the primary work of this lesson.

Generally, I try to pair context clues worksheets with these lessons that point the way toward the meaning of the root under study. So I am uncertain what I was thinking or I attended when I prepared this worksheet on the noun discord for this lesson. Use it or not (and like it or not, which, as of this writing, I do not), but it is what I have for this at the moment.

Cultural Literacy: Nota Bene

The first time I saw “N.B.” on a piece of academic work, I was a thirty-two-year-old “non-traditional student” studying the Russian language at Amherst College through the Five College Exchange (I was matriculated at Hampshire College). Once I figured out that it stood for nota bene, and then figured out what nota bene means–“note well,” just how it looks–I began using it regularly myself. If you’ve perused this blog at all, you’ve no doubt seen it in a post.

So here, without further ado, is a Cultural Literacy worksheet on the Latinism nota bene. This is a half-page worksheet with a reading of two simple sentences and three comprehension questions. Just the basics.

The Weekly Text, 2 August 2024: A Lesson on the Latin Word Root Trans

This week’s Text is a lesson on the Latin word root trans. It means “across,” “through,” “change,” and “beyond.” This is an extremely productive root in English, yielding such high frequency words as transact, transcript, transit, transform, and transfer. In fact, all of those words are on the scaffolded worksheet that is the principle work of this lesson, and which includes, as all the Latin word root worksheets on this blog do, a list of cognates from the Romance languages.

I use this context clues worksheet on the transitive verb ford to open this lesson. It means “to cross (a body of water) by wading.” Needless to say, it is meant to point students toward the meaning of across in this word root.

The Weekly Text, 19 July 2024: A Lesson on the Latin Word Roots Terr, Terra, and Terri

The Weekly Text at Mark’s Text Terminal for 19 July 2024 is this lesson on the Latin word roots terr, terra, and terri. They mean “earth” and “land.” The do-now exercise for this lesson, this context clues worksheet on the noun real estate attempts to point students in the direction of these roots and make the connection between the nouns earth, land, and the vernacular real estate.

This scaffolded worksheet, replete with a cognate list from the primary Romance languages (not Romansh, alas, though perhaps Romansh isn’t a primary language?) is the principle work for this lesson.

The Weekly Text, 28 June 2024: A Lesson Plan on the Latin Word Root Six

This week’s Text is a lesson plan on the Latin word rood sex, which means six. This doesn’t produce a lot of high frequency words in English, but like the previous word root lesson that appeared on this blog, it is a root that shows up in words that are otherwise difficult to understand, like sexagenarian, sextuplet, sexennial, and sextet. They’re all included on the scaffolded worksheet, replete with cognates from the Romance languages that grow from Latin roots, that serves as the mainstay of this lesson

As I write this post, I find mysterious my choice, for this lesson, of this do-now exercise 0n the noun intercourse. It means, in the context of the sentence in which I have placed it on this worksheet, “connection or dealings between persons or groups” as well as “exchange, especially of thoughts or feelings.” So, unlike other lessons (but like the lesson on sept), there is no meaningful connection between the do-now and the main work of this lesson.

The Weekly Text, 7 June 2024: A Lesson Plan on the Latin Word Root Sept

This week’s Text is a lesson on the Latin word root sept. Unlike many of the other lessons on word roots this blog published, sept is not at the root of a lot of high frequency words–except for September, of course. So the scaffolded worksheet that is the principle work of this lesson contains a lot of seldom-used words such as septet (unless of course you are a Wynton Marsalis fan surprised by his disbanding of his estimable septet), septillion, septuagint, and septuble, and includes a list of cognates from the Romance languages.

This do-now exercise on the adjective and adverb weekly doesn’t quite point the way toward the meaning of sept as I would have hoped it would. A week has seven days, of course, but weekly means as an adverb “every week,” “once a week,” and “by the week”; as an adjective, it means “occurring, appearing, or done weekly.” So nothing denoting or connoting seven, alas.

So this lesson leaves something to be desired in terms of coherence and priorities (i.e. is this the best word root to teach? Is there a root more productive of high-frequency English words that would be more useful to students?). But what do you think?

The Weekly Text, 26 April 2024: A Lesson Plan on the Latin Word Roots Scrib and Script

This lesson plan on the Latin word roots scrib and script stands for this week’s Text at Mark’s Text Terminal. These mean, as you might have already inferred, mean “write” and “to write.” You’ll find these two roots in such high-frequency English words describe, manuscript, prescribe, and scribble.

I open this lesson with this context clues worksheet on the verb compose. The context in this document supports a definition of the verb compose, used transitively, as meaning “to create by mental or artistic labor” and “to formulate and write.”

This week’s Text is a lesson plan on the word root retro. It’s of Latin origin and means, as you might have already guessed, “back,” “backward,” and “behind.” The commonly used English words retrofit, retrograde, retroactive, and retrospect grow from this root.

The Weekly Text, 12 January 2024: A Lesson Plan on the Latin Word Roots Quadr, Quadri, Quadru, and Quadra

This week’s Text is a lesson plan on the Latin word roots quadr, quadri, quadru, and quadra. They mean, of course, four, and they are at the roots of high school words like quadratic (equation) and more general purpose English words like quadrangle and quadrant.

I open this lesson with this context clues worksheet on the verb quarter. I’m not sure why I chose the verb, as it has nothing to do with the meaning of the root on this worksheet, but rather means, in the context supplied, “to provide with lodging or shelter.” The verb also means “to cut or divide into four equal or nearly equal parts,” and I think this document would probably best be rewritten to furnish that context for inferring this word’s meaning.

Unless of course you’re teaching a lesson on the Third Amendment to the United States Constitution,, i.e. “No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.” In that case, the above-linked context clues worksheet may have some utility for you.

Cultural Literacy: Vis-a-Vis

Here is a Cultural Literacy worksheet on the adjective and preposition vis-a-vis. This is a half-page worksheet with a reading of one sentence and two questions. One of the questions calls for the composition of a sentence using vis-a-vis, so it could be easily eliminated if you just to introduce the use of this term in the vernacular–that is, to mean “in relation to.” I will say that this worksheet does little more than that, which I discovered when I researched the word a bit at Merriam-Webster. This Gallicism literally means “face-to-face” and can be used that way as a noun, should you care to extend this worksheet further.
