Agriculture (n), Agrarian (adj)

While they are probably available in at least one other permutation on this website, here is context clues worksheet on the noun agriculture and another on the adjective agrarian. Catch-22 (n)

If Joseph Heller is accurately quoted in the passage above, he understood on some level that the title of his novel Catch-22 would show up in the American vernacular as a designator of bureaucratic absurdity. It turns up everywhere in discourse in the United States, and as I sat down to write this context clues worksheet on the noun catch-22 (it’s Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day today), I wondered whether or not there are users of this noun who don’t realize that it derives from the title of an esteemed American novel.

It’s a difficult locution to work into a context clues worksheet, because, while its meanings are interrelated, there are enough of them (“a problematic situation for which the only solution is denied by a circumstance inherent in the problem or by a rule”;  “an illogical, unreasonable, or senseless situation”;  “a measure or policy whose effect is the opposite of what was intended”; “a situation presenting two equally undesirable alternatives” and “a hidden difficulty or means of entrapment”) that this is arguably a polysemous word.

Anyway, catch-22 also sufficiently abstract that if I use this worksheet at all, it will be with somewhat more advanced students.

Animate (vt)

Here’s a context clues worksheet on the verb animate. This is one of those good, lively verbs that students probably ought to know for its own sake–i.e., that it is a very strong verb. Besides meaning “to produce in the form of an animated cartoon” it can mean, depending on context, “to give spirit and support to : ENCOURAGE,”to give life to,” “to give vigor and zest to,” and the way I generally use it in expository prose, “to move to action.”

In any case, as a verb, animate is only used transitively.

Term of Art: Context Clues

“context clues: Using information in a sentence or paragraph surrounding a new term to help the reader understand that term. There are several items to look for when searching for context clues, including

  • a punctuation mark (such as a comma or dash) that may signal that information is being presented about the new term
  • key words: words such as or and that is may signal that definition is to follow.
  • Definition: sometimes the meaning of a new word may be made clear by reading the entire paragraph in which it appears.

Learning to use context clues to gain meaning is an important reading skill. A student who is able to use the context to identify an unknown word, grasp the meaning of a word, or comprehend a passage read, will become a good reader.”

It’s Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day today, to here is a context clues worksheet on the verb ferret. It’s used both intransitively and transitively. You might note for students that in this sense of the verb’s use–i.e., “to find an bring to light by searching”–ferret always appears with the preposition out.

Beholden (adj)

Here’s a context clues worksheet on the adjective beholden because it’s Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day today. It also happens to be a commonly used and sturdy adjective, so I submit–particularly because we live in a period of rising political corruption around the world–that this is a word high school students should know upon graduation.

It’s Merriam-Webster’s word of the day for today, so here is a context clues worksheet on the adjective demure. I’ve always thought of this as one of those locutions the great Joseph Mitchell called “tinsel words,” but maybe students ought to know it anyway, even if just to understand the meaning of the expression “tinsel word.”
