The Weekly Text, 30 August 2024: A Reading and Comprehension Worksheet on the Great Depression

This week’s end-of-the-summer-break Text is this reading on the Great Depression with its accompanying vocabulary-building and comprehension worksheet. You probably won’t be surprised to hear that this is another set from the Intellectual Devotional series; I still have over two hundred of these in a drafts folder for future use. Some are more relevant than others. Yet I think it can’t hurt to be fully prepared to meet student interest when it arises.

The Weekly Text, 23 August 2024: A Lesson Plan on the Latin Word Root Uni

Alright, as the summer winds down and the days contract, this week’s Text is this lesson on the Latin word root uni. You already know, of course, that it means one. You also know that this root is quite productive in English, giving us words like unidirectional, unify, unilateral, and unique, all of which are included (along with a list of cognates in the Romance languages) on the scaffolded worksheet that is the primary work of this lesson.

Generally, I try to pair context clues worksheets with these lessons that point the way toward the meaning of the root under study. So I am uncertain what I was thinking or I attended when I prepared this worksheet on the noun discord for this lesson. Use it or not (and like it or not, which, as of this writing, I do not), but it is what I have for this at the moment.

The Weekly Text, 16 August 2024: A Lesson on Anniversary Gifts from The Order of Things

This week’s Text is this lesson plan on anniversary gifts along with its attendant reading worksheet with comprehension questions. The reading (as is the case with all readings under the current header) is a list from Barbara Ann Kipfer’s magisterial reference book The Order of Things. I’ve said it before, but it bears saying again: the lesson plans I have thus far developed based on entries from The Order of Things are aimed at struggling or emergent readers.

This particular lesson might be useful in a broader unit about folkways and customs. In my experience, social studies classes tend to regularly deal with folkways and customs–i.e. culture–without explicitly addressing the concepts these words represent. That baffles me, as the broad culture has such rich possibilities for transfer into other learning domains.

The Weekly Text, 9 August 2024: A Reading and Comprehension Worksheet on the Atom

The Weekly Text from Mark’s Text Terminal for Friday, 9 August 2024 is this reading on the atom along with its accompanying vocabulary-building and comprehension worksheet. This reading is from the Intellectual Devotional series; it serves as a good general introduction to the basic concept and configuration of the atom, but not a great deal more. As I am not a science teacher, I really cannot speak to the effectiveness or utility of these documents.

The Weekly Text, 2 August 2024: A Lesson on the Latin Word Root Trans

This week’s Text is a lesson on the Latin word root trans. It means “across,” “through,” “change,” and “beyond.” This is an extremely productive root in English, yielding such high frequency words as transact, transcript, transit, transform, and transfer. In fact, all of those words are on the scaffolded worksheet that is the principle work of this lesson, and which includes, as all the Latin word root worksheets on this blog do, a list of cognates from the Romance languages.

I use this context clues worksheet on the transitive verb ford to open this lesson. It means “to cross (a body of water) by wading.” Needless to say, it is meant to point students toward the meaning of across in this word root.

The Weekly Text, 19 July 2024: A Lesson on the Latin Word Roots Terr, Terra, and Terri

The Weekly Text at Mark’s Text Terminal for 19 July 2024 is this lesson on the Latin word roots terr, terra, and terri. They mean “earth” and “land.” The do-now exercise for this lesson, this context clues worksheet on the noun real estate attempts to point students in the direction of these roots and make the connection between the nouns earth, land, and the vernacular real estate.

This scaffolded worksheet, replete with a cognate list from the primary Romance languages (not Romansh, alas, though perhaps Romansh isn’t a primary language?) is the principle work for this lesson.

The Weekly Text, 12 July 2024: A Reading and Comprehension Worksheet on Epistemology

Epistemology, officially (from Merriam-Webster, of course!), simply defined, is “the study or a theory of the nature and grounds of knowledge especially with reference to its limits and validity.” Unofficially, and for the consumption of secondary-school students, it means “how we know what we know” and “how we validate what we know.” In many respects, along with reification (to reify is “to regard (something abstract) as a material or concrete thing”) teachers are in the epistemology business.

In any event, some years ago, I had a student who had conceived an interest in Western Philosophy. His grandmother had one of those Great Courses on cassette tape, and he listened to it with her. This was a tough Bronx street kid–I later heard he’d been arrested for attempted murder; but he had an acute interest in philosophy. Among the number of things I worked up to keep him engaged is this reading on epistemology along with its attendant vocabulary-building and comprehension worksheet.

The Weekly Text, 5 July 2024: A Lesson Plan on Shakespeare’s Plays in Chronological Order by Date of Publication from The Order of Things

This week’s Text is another lesson, this one on Shakespeare’s plays in chronological order of publication, adapted from Barbara Ann Kipfer’s superlative reference book The Order of Things.

You’ll need this worksheet with a reading (which is a list) and attendant comprehension questions. Nota bene, once again, that this series of lessons from The Order of Things, at least in my design conception, is meant to serve emergent and struggling readers as well as learners of English as a new language. Many, if not most of the lessons adapted from Ms. Kipfer’s book offer students a chance to deal with two symbolic systems–i.e. numbers and words–in a relatively stress-free way.

The Weekly Text, 28 June 2024: A Lesson Plan on the Latin Word Root Six

This week’s Text is a lesson plan on the Latin word rood sex, which means six. This doesn’t produce a lot of high frequency words in English, but like the previous word root lesson that appeared on this blog, it is a root that shows up in words that are otherwise difficult to understand, like sexagenarian, sextuplet, sexennial, and sextet. They’re all included on the scaffolded worksheet, replete with cognates from the Romance languages that grow from Latin roots, that serves as the mainstay of this lesson

As I write this post, I find mysterious my choice, for this lesson, of this do-now exercise 0n the noun intercourse. It means, in the context of the sentence in which I have placed it on this worksheet, “connection or dealings between persons or groups” as well as “exchange, especially of thoughts or feelings.” So, unlike other lessons (but like the lesson on sept), there is no meaningful connection between the do-now and the main work of this lesson.
