The Devil’s Dictionary: Dullard

“Dullard, n. A member of the reigning dynasty in letters and life. The Dullards came in with Adam, and being both numerous and sturdy have overrun the habitable world. The secret of their power is the insensibility to blows; tickle them with a bludgeon and they laugh with a platitude. The Dullards came originally from Boetia, whence they were driven by stress of starvation, their dullness having blighted the crops. For some centuries, they infested Philistia, and many of them are called Philistines to this day. In the turbulent times of the Crusades they withdrew thence and gradually overspread all Europe, occupying most of the high places in politics, art, literature, science, and theology. Since a detachment of Dullards came over with the Pilgrims in the Mayflower and made a favorable report of the country, their increase by birth, immigration, and conversion has been rapid and steady. According to the most trustworthy statistics the number of adult Dullards in the United States is but little short of thirty millions, including the statisticians, The intellectual center of the race is somewhere about Peoria, Illinois, but the New England Dullard is the most shockingly moral.”

Write It Right: Conclude for Decide

Conclude for Decide: “‘I concluded to go to town.’ Having concluded a course of reasoning (implied) I decided to go to town. A decision is supposed to be made at the conclusion of a course of reasoning, but it is not the conclusion itself. Conversely, the conclusion of a syllogism is not a decision, but an inference.”

Doctor Zhivago

“A novel (1957) by the Russian writer Boris Pasternak (1890-1960). Set against the background of the Russian Revolution and the ensuing civil war, it tells the story of poet and physician Yuri Zhivago, whose love for the beautiful Lara causes pain for all involved. In Russian, zhivago means ‘the living’, and the word has strong religious connotations: the Russian version of ‘Why do you seek the living among the dead’ (the question the angels ask the women who come to see Christ’s tomb in the Gospel of St. Luke) is ‘Chto vy ischyote zhivago mezhdu myortvykh?’ In addition, Yuri is the Russian version of George–the dragon-slaying saint.

The book brought Pasternak himself little happiness. Following his award of the Nobel Prize for Literature, he was pilloried by literary rivals, who accused him of plagiarizing other works, and his companion Olga Ivinskaya, on whom Lara was based, was thrown into prison by the Soviets. The first Russian publication of the novel did not take place until 1987.

David Lean’s epic film version (1965) lasts over 190 minutes, and stars Omar Sharif as Zhivago and Julie Christie as Lara. Maurice Jarre’s haunting ‘Lara’s Theme’, played on the balalaika, has become a favorite in all places where muzak is played.”

Pore (n/v), Poor (adj), and Pour (v)

On a rainy Saturday morning (aside: should it be pouring rain in New England on January 5th? Shouldn’t this be snow?), Mark’s Text Terminal is humming right along. Here are five worksheets on the homophones pore, poor, and pour. A few notes about these words: pore as a verb is apparently only used intransitively, and in its most common application in English is used with the adverb over; as a verb, pour can be used both intransitively and transitively. While these worksheets don’t address it, pour can also be used as a noun, and can mean the action of pouring,  and instance of pouring or an amount poured, and a heavy fall of rain: DOWNPOUR.

Abominable (adj)

It was Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day yesterday, so here today is a context clues worksheet on the adjective abominable. It strikes me as a good word to use to demonstrate English morphology by pointing out to students its forms as a noun (abomination), a verb (abominate) and an adverb (abominably).
