Historical Term: Anti-Semitism

“Anti-Semitism Term first applied in the mid-19th century to denote animosity toward the Jews. Throughout the middle ages the Jews faced hostility on religious grounds and because, unlike Catholics, they were allowed to practice usury. Modern anti-Semitism differs in being largely politically and economically motivated, doctrinaire, and based on a pseudo-scientific rationale devised by, for example, Gobineau (1816-82), Houston Stewart Chamberlain (1855-1927) and Nazi ‘philosophers.’ In the 1870s a group of German writers, using the linguistic distinctions ‘Semitic’ and ‘Aryan’ as racial terms, began speaking of the Jews and a distinct and inferior race. Anti-Semitic political parties were active in both Germany and Austria-Hungary in the 1880s while pogroms began in Russia in 1882. In France the 1894 Dreyfus case revealed a large core of anti-Semitic feeling. Between 1905 and 1909 anti-Jewish violence on a large scale again broke out in Tsarist Russia, particularly in Lithuania and Poland. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries thousands of Jews from eastern Europe fled to Britain and the USA. From 1920 to 1933 Hitler expounded theories of racial supremacy and blamed the Jews for Germany’s misfortunes. The Nuremberg Laws of 1935 codified Nazi theories of race, denied Jews citizenship and forbade them to marry Aryans; in 1938 Jewish property was confiscated. During World War II over five million Jews were murdered in concentration camps. Since 1945 anti-Semitism has usually been a reaction to Zionism and the state of Israel. In the USSR anti-Semitism re-emerged in 1953 and there was serious violence against Jewish communities in 1958-9. In 1962-3 Jews were executed for ‘economic crimes’ and until recently many Jews seeking to emigrate to Israel have been imprisoned.”

Cultural Literacy: Otto von Bismarck

I can’t imagine how one teaches or understands the history of modern Europe, and Germany over the past two centuries, or even, arguably, modern conservatism, without knowing something about the Iron Chancellor. This is a full page worksheet, suitable for independent practice (i.e. homework).

Term of Art: Antecedent

It’s Merriam-Webster’s word of the day today, so here is a context clues worksheet on the verb emulate. It’s only used transitively, so don’t forget your direct object: One must emulate something or someone.

Term of Art: Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis

acquisition-learning hypothesis: A theory that there are two ways to describe the learning of language. One way is subconscious acquisition, which is how infants learn their native language. The other is learning through acquisition and study, which is the typical approach found in schools. Many teachers of foreign language now prefer the subconscious acquisition approach, which attempts to approximate living in a foreign country and being immersed in the use of the new language. Legerdemain (n)

Because it was recently Merriam-Webster’s word of the day, in the interests of my own ongoing cognitive agility (like everyone else, I am not getting any younger), I wrote this context clues worksheet on the noun legerdemain. It means both “sleight of hand” and “a display of skill or adroitness.” It’s probably not anyone’s idea of a word kids really must know by their high school graduation.

So I almost skipped developing this worksheet. Yet, it nagged at me. At this point, I have spent my career as a teacher in the service of struggling students. One of the things I noticed my charges struggled with, year in and year our, was abstractions and concepts. Since most kids know what magic and card tricks are, I saw an opportunity to show them both the abstract and the concrete using this word. Parenthetically, I think one of the reasons so many struggling learners tend to tussle with abstractions is that they have been taught not to trust their perceptions. Here, I submit, is a word that can help them learn to know and trust the accuracy of their perceptions because they possess the relatively simple prior knowledge to understand it.

Or maybe not. In any case, I’m just sayin’.

Halftone

“Halftone: In photoengraving, a process in which gradations of light (value) are obtained by manipulating the density of minute dots on the printing surface. The conversion of image to dots is achieved by photographing the subject through a special screen. Halftones have been in use since 1878.”

Doonesbury

If you have any budding comic strip drafters, graphic novelists, or just kids who like to draw in your cohort (I’ve had quite a few over the years), then this reading on the comic strip Doonesbury and its vocabulary-building and comprehension worksheet might be of interest to them. In my experience, this reading has been high-interest material for a certain kind of student, especially once they’ve seen the strip itself–available in most daily newspapers and, of course, online. If you had told me that more than forty years after I was introduced to this strip in high school it would still be going strong in 2020, I don’t know if I would have believed it.

So, if nothing else, the topical nature of Doonesbury and its longevity, inextricably intertwined as they are, is an area for some critical inquiry.
