I Beg Your Pardon, Madame Chancellor

Mark’s Text Terminal is not a political blog, mostly because Mark finds politics utterly repulsive.

That said, I arrived at work this morning, opened my Department of Education email account, and found this message from the Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, Carmen Farina (I’ve copied and pasted this for the sake of absolute veracity, but also added quotes):

“Voting is a privilege. Exercise it.”

Begging the Chancellor’s pardon–and I responded to her email with this–voting is a right in our democratic republic.

And that, I submit, is a distinction a chancellor of a public school system should be able to make, understand, appreciate, and articulate, for heaven’s sake.
